Use the Whole Plant: Hydrosols, Infusions, and Extracts

Posted by Precious Campbell on

Many of us have used essential oils, and last week we explored their impact on the environment and our health. Today, let’s look at other plant-based ingredients and how they can benefit both us and the planet.

Hydrosols, also known as herbal distillates or floral waters, are a byproduct of steam distillation, which is the same process used to produce essential oils. During distillation, water vapor extracts both essential oil and water-soluble compounds from the plant. The resulting hydrosol contains small amounts of essential oil as well as a variety of beneficial plant constituents. Hydrosols are often fragrant and soothing, making them useful in skincare as facial toners, body sprays, or gentle additions to lotions and soaps.

Herbal infusions are another accessible and sustainable way to use the whole plant. One method involves steeping dried herbs in a carrier oil over several weeks, allowing the oil to absorb beneficial compounds such as vitamins, antioxidants, and plant sterols. Other infusion methods use water, glycerin, or alcohol, depending on the properties you want to extract and how you intend to use them.

These techniques are more sustainable than essential oil production. For instance, you can grow your own herbs, dry them using sunlight or air, and infuse them in small batches as needed. This allows for a lower carbon footprint, reduces waste, and promotes a deeper connection to the ingredients you use.

At Aurora Bath & Beauty, I love finding ways to use the whole plant. One example is our lip balm formula. You’ll find Equisetum Arvense, the scientific name for the horsetail herb, listed among the ingredients. Horsetail was chosen for its skin-nourishing properties, offering deep hydration and a mineral-rich profile that benefits lips. I could have used an essential oil, but I’ve learned that the power of plants doesn’t end with one ingredient. Sometimes, gentler options like infusions bring even greater benefits while being kinder to our environment.
